Herbal Remedies for Mom Burnout

Herbal Remedies for Mom Burnout

We fell in love with Sol Remedies' Holy Cacao, the most deliciously magical hot cocoa mix we've ever tried after discovering it on Kauai. Perfectly balanced, with a rich cacao flavor highlighted with vanilla and rooted by maca and nourishing adaptogens - we knew whoever formulated it was special. And that's how we met Kelsy Burch, the expert herbalist and doula founder of Sol Remedies. We invited her to share a guest blog post on how herbal remedies can support mothers through all stages of pregnancy, postpartum and #momlife.

As a Doula and clinical herbalist, I hold a deep passion for supporting mothers during the postpartum period and throughout their motherhood journey. Many people believe that once the baby arrives, the hardest part is behind them, but in truth, it marks the beginning of a profound and transformative experience. It’s essential to check in on how the Mama is doing, both physically and emotionally. The challenges of stress, sleep deprivation, and the demands on the nervous system can be overwhelming. My goal is to be a source of support and healing during this time, helping to nurture and empower mothers as they navigate this new chapter and to facilitate in a more time honored way, by using plant medicine.

How can herbal remedies play a significant role in supporting our well-being?

1. Stress Reduction
Herbs like chamomile, lavender, and lemon balm are known for their calming effects. They can help reduce anxiety and promote relaxation, making it easier for new mothers to cope with the stresses of motherhood.

2. Mood Enhancement
Adaptogenic herbs such as ashwagandha and rhodiola can help the body adapt to stress and improve mood. These herbs support the adrenal glands and can help alleviate feelings of fatigue and overwhelm.

 3. Sleep Support
New mothers often struggle with sleep due to the demands of their newborns. Herbs like valerian root and passionflower can promote restful sleep and help combat insomnia, allowing mothers to recharge.

 4. Nutritional Support
Herbal teas made from nettle or red clover can provide essential nutrients that support overall health and vitality, which is crucial for emotional well-being.

 5. Hormonal Balance
Some herbs, such as vitex (chaste tree), can help balance hormones post-pregnancy, which may alleviate mood swings and emotional fluctuations.

 6. Connection and Ritual
The act of preparing and consuming herbal remedies can create a calming ritual, providing new mothers with a moment of self-care and connection to their own needs.

 7. Digestive Health
Herbal remedies like ginger and peppermint can aid digestion, which can be beneficial since digestive issues are common after childbirth and can contribute to feelings of discomfort and irritability.

How to incorporate herbs?
If you are seeking ways to integrate these herbs into your daily regimen, consider the following preferred methods: Herbal tea serves as a delightful ritual that can be savored either hot or iced. I recommend preparing a larger batch to store in the refrigerator, which makes it easier to stick to your routine.

Herbal-infused water is another effective approach to maintain hydration while reaping the benefits of various plants. To prepare it, simply add fresh sprigs of mint, rosemary, lemon wedges, or other delicate herbs to your water. This not only enhances the flavor but also infuses your hydration routine with additional health benefits.

Tinctures provide an excellent means of obtaining a concentrated dose of herbal extracts in a compact form. They offer the advantages of extended shelf life and convenience for those with a busy lifestyle.
