The Challenge: Natural vs. Synthetic Blankets

Why Composting Matters

Composting is a fantastic way to reduce waste and contribute to a healthier planet.  By composting organic materials, we can enrich soil, reduce landfill waste, and lower greenhouse gas emissions. But what about our every day fabric choices? Compostability is a useful litmus test for human and environmental health when it comes to textiles. Choosing natural, biodegradable products like our natural fiber blankets supports these efforts, whereas synthetic products are not only not as healthy for baby's skin but often contribute to long-lasting pollution.

We prepared a backyard compost bin with layers of green and brown materials (aka kitchen scraps and plant matter), ensuring a balanced mix to promote efficient decomposition. On one side of the bin, we placed our Popcorn blanket, which is made with 100% merino. On the other side, we added a 100% polyester fleece "luxury" blanket from a leading brand. Over the next year and few months, we monitored the compost bin, turning it regularly to aerate and encourage the decomposition process.

As of this July, the results were clear: The natural fibers of the organic merino blanket had broken down into pieces that easily pulled apart, flecked with large holes and circles of fuzzy mold, enriching the soil with its organic matter. In stark contrast, the synthetic fleece blanket remained largely intact, showing little to no signs of decomposition. This stark difference highlights the persistent nature of synthetic materials in our environment.
